“Kong Yiji” is a horribly sad and pessimistic story set in a fictional town of Luzhen, about a failed scholar who is supporting himself by writing letters and documents, and occasionally stealing. It is easy to see the allusions to contemporary society here also cannibalism seems to be a recurring theme in Lu Xün’s writing. He finds allusions and instructions pertaining to cannibalism everywhere, even in Confucian classics, and in the end recalls his sister who died when she was five, and he starts wondering whether his family, especially his brother who is now taking care if him, hadn’t fed him her meat as well, so that he himself is also, in fact, a cannibal, just like everyone. It is an extremely depressing story of a man who is convince that all people around him are cannibals, waiting to devour him. “A Madman’s Diary” is first in the collection, but I read is as second, after “Kong Yiji”. I quite liked some stories in this collection, some not so much. It took me forever though, one of the reasons being that the book has super tiny print. I’m glad I read some more of this author at last. Last year, Snyder's Best Jackett Press was launched in advance of the Image Comics series Nocterra to act as a shingle for Snyder's various creator-owned projects. "This deal allows me the freedom to explore the kind of storytelling I've wanted to try for a long time, while supporting my need to try something that's not totally comfortable for me." "This historic, multi-title deal with comiXology Originals has enabled us to assemble a murderers' row of artists and together we're challenging ourselves creatively to work outside of our comfort zones and really lean into the possibilities of making comics," Snyder says. Several of these books will debut in October 2021, with more details to be announced later in the year. After that, Dark Horse will publish print editions - some as original graphic novels, some as first as serialized issues. Klein, 74, seems not to mind the notoriety. His book on Hillary, The Truth about Hillary: What She Knew, When She Knew It, and How Far She Will Go to Become President, published in 2005 when Hillary was enjoying rave reviews as a New York senator, caused friends to disinvite him to parties and acquaintances to accost him in restaurants, saying, “Did you do that for the money? Is that why you wrote that book?” His first biography, and the one of which he says he’s most proud, All Too Human: The Love Story of Jack and Jackie Kennedy, published in 1996, cost him his friendship with Jackie. He became the pen behind the Parade magazine gossip column, “Walter Scott’s Personality Parade,” and he became a writer of unauthorized biographies-seven so far, including several books on the Kennedys, a harshly critical book about Hillary Clinton, and a biography of former CBS news anchor Katie Couric. Ed Klein, the former editor of The New York Times Magazine (1977-87) and foreign editor of Newsweek, was in Chicago this week to conduct interviews for his latest biography-this one focusing on Barack and Michelle Obama and their friend and adviser Valerie Jarrett and their interactions in the White House.Īfter being forced to resign from the Times magazine-a change of regimes, he explains-Klein’s life took a very different course.
